Father + bear = lion
✓ With solution
Every letter hides a digit. Can you find the number hiding behind the lion?
In Arabic this sum reads «أب + دب = أسد»: father + bear = lion! With English letters it is AB + DB = ASD. Each letter stands for a digit: the same letter is always the same digit, different letters are different digits, and no number starts with 0.
What number is ASD (the lion)?

Start with A: can two 2-digit numbers ever add up to 200?
Show the answer
Answer: 108, because 19 + 89 = 108. Two 2-digit numbers add up to less than 200, so A = 1. Units: B + B ends in D, so D is even. Tens: 1 + D plus any carry must reach at least 10, because the answer has three digits, so D is at least 8; being even, D = 8. So B + B ends in 8, which means B is 4 or 9. With B = 4 there is no carry and 1 + 8 = 9 is not enough. So B = 9: 19 + 89 = 108. S is 0, and the lion is 108.
