Trick questions: will you fall for them?
✓ With solution
Three short questions where the quick answer is usually wrong. Read every word carefully!
Divide 30 by a half, then add 10. What do you get?
- A25
- B35
- C60
- D70
Show the answer
Answer: D) 70. Dividing by a half is not dividing by 2. Ask yourself: how many halves are there in 30? Each whole has two halves, so 30 has sixty. So 30 ÷ ½ = 60, then 60 + 10 = 70. The quick wrong answer, 25, comes from dividing 30 by 2, and 60 is for anyone who forgot to add 10.
There are 3 apples on the table and you take 2 of them. How many apples do you have?
- AOne
- BTwo
- CThree
- DNone
Show the answer
Answer: B) Two. Two! The question is about what you have, not what's left on the table. You took two apples, so you have two; one is left on the table, and that's the answer that jumps to mind first.
How many times can you subtract 5 from 25?
Show a hint
After you subtract 5 the first time, is the number still 25?
Show the answer
Answer: Only once. Only once! After the first time the number is 20, so every subtraction after that is from 20, 15 or 10, not from 25. The answer that comes to mind first is 5 times, which is how many times you can subtract 5 before you reach zero.
